Kanwar Mela : Train Updates
During the Kanwar Mela, millions of devotees, known as Kanwariyas, embark on a pilgrimage to collect sacred water from the Ganges River and carry it back to their local Shiva temples. This event typically occurs in the Hindu month of Shravan (July-August), a period considered highly auspicious for Lord Shiva. The participants, primarily Shiva devotees from various parts of India, wear saffron-colored clothes and often walk long distances barefoot. The pilgrimage usually involves traveling to holy cities such as Haridwar, Gaumukh, Gangotri, and Sultanganj to collect the sacred water. The water is carried in decorated pots hung on either end of a bamboo pole, called Kanwar, which the devotees carry on their shoulders. This water is then offered to the Shiva linga in local temples. The Kanwar Yatra is a demonstration of devotion and penance, with devotees believing that carrying the water and offering it to Lord Shiva purifies them of sins and brings blessings.
