India’s inaugural Vande Bharat Express sleeper train is slated to commence service by the end of December, with the first set from Bengaluru’s Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) scheduled for dispatch on September 20. Bengaluru Central MP PC Mohan confirmed this on social media, stating, “The first Vande Bharat sleeper train will be dispatched from Bengaluru’s BEML plant by September 20 and is expected to be operational by December.” The sleeper coaches for this new train are being produced by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) and Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML). Once introduced, these sleeper trains will mark a major enhancement to the Indian Railways fleet, enabling passengers to travel long distances comfortably overnight on high-speed trains. Currently, Vande Bharat Express trains only offer seating options, but this new version will feature sleeping berths. Reports indicate that the sleeper coaches will come with wider berths, brighter interiors, and more spacious toilets. The new Vande Bharat Express sleeper train will consist of 16 coaches with a total of 823 berths, including 11 3AC coaches (611 berths), 4 2AC coaches (188 berths), and 1 1AC coach (24 berths).

The 10 rakes of 16-car Vande Bharat sleeper train will run with a maximum operating speed of 160 kmph (180 kmph during testing).

Designs and Launch Details

The interior of these next-generation sleeper trains is designed to meet passenger requirements, providing ample space and convenient ladders for accessing upper berths.

The planned Vande Bharat Sleeper Class will adhere to the same luggage limit as the aircraft. This sleeper train, comprising 20-22 coaches, will incorporate 3 designated luggage bogies for heavy baggage. Passengers carrying luggage exceeding 40 kg will incur additional charges per kilogram.
